Build a business that can support you when you can’t support yourself.
2020 was a dumpster fire.
And as the flames consumed energies we didn’t know were possible, it’s incredibly hard to show up for your business – when you can barely show up for yourself.
We are essentially saying to ourselves: How can I protect ‘me’ from my business.
After losing 2 of my best friends in the ladder part of 2020 (my mom & dog of 14yrs) and moving across 3 states within 3 months – this was exactly how I felt.
I tried pushing. Doing tasks and projects without allowing me time to mourn.
Physically showing up for clients, yet hardly being present.
All of my energy was consumed – emotionally, energetically & creatively.
This didn’t do anyone, including myself any favors.
So I changed the question to this: How can I LET my business carry me when I can’t?
First-time founders will experience this at some point if not many different intervals in their career.
Here’s how to safeguard your sanity and build a business that can support you when you feel like you can’t support yourself (emotionally & energetically).
Focus on your business assets. Preferably BEFORE the stuff hits the fan.
- Build a 3-month cash reserve
- Focus on programming
- Your customer’s journey
- Intellectual properties
- Promise to your customers
Remember you are human & growth (of any kind) is cyclical. It’s not about ‘slaying the dragon’ of your emotions but rather setting you up for success in the future.
Focusing on the above items sooner than later will create more space for your healing and less responsibility and pressure you put on yourself for immediate business needs.
